A Sermon on Faith and Science

This is a sermon that I preached this past year at Shenandoah University.  There are a few references to the sermon we had heard the week before.  So, read Genesis 1. Get comfy, and enjoy. Continue reading “A Sermon on Faith and Science”

Offering Our All

Tonight at Peakland UMC, we had Peakland AfterHours; an opportunity to gather for informal worship, communion and my favorite part…Disney/Pixar movies. The movie tonight was “Finding Nemo”, y’all, I forgot how much I enjoyed this movie.  We only watched selected clips (but truth be told, I’m going to watch it one night this week).  Our Scripture that we read and discussed was Genesis 22:1 – 18, which is about Abraham offering Isaac to God as an offering. This one’s for the girls…

If you feel like you are too overweight, if you feel like you are too skinny, this is for you. If you look in the mirror and see dark circles around your eyes, this is for you. If you stand on the scale and the numbers make you openly weep, this is for you. If you check your outfit and change six different times before going to class or work, this is for you. This is for all of us whom society has told we’re not pretty enough, too short, too tall, too thin, too fat, too young looking, too old looking and everything in between.  Continue reading “This one’s for the girls…”

When Safe Spaces Aren’t

Feb 26, 2008 may seem like just another day to most people, in fact it probably feels like a regular day to everyone else I went to college with.  Not for me, however.  You see, on Feb 26, I woke up and put on three loads of laundry and walked back to my room when my phone began to buzz.  The message was from our emergency alert system, informing the college campus that we were on lockdown.  There was a man on campus, with a gun. Oh, The Places You Will Go

This past Sunday and Wednesday, I had the privilege of being able to preach in both Goodson Chapel (at Shenandoah University) and Oxnam Chapel (at Wesley Seminary).  I’ve attached the recording from my sermon at Oxnam Chapel, and I hope that you enjoy it.  The scripture passage was Acts 16:9 – 15.  I cannot believe that I have delivered my final sermons and that graduation is only nine days away!

Dance in the Graveyards

The past month or so, I have been witness to communities mourning and grieving.  I wrote this sermon for my preaching class last year.  It is about Psalm 30 and the way in which I have fought and argued and danced around death with my God. I encourage you to listen to the following song, and then read the text.  It will all make sense, my friends.  I pray that you find some strength and hope in these words.

Brokenness and Blessing

For the past three years, my mum and I have utilized my Spring Reading Week as a chance to get away, just the two of us.  We head to the beach and spend our week shopping, walking around and enjoying a break in the midst of our respectively busy lives.  This year, we headed to the beach and decided to take a road trip.  The following is what happened as we ventured around Charleston.
